"What is the connection between computers and holography?
It's very synergistic that these two technologies are developing at the same time. It's only now that reasonably available computer systems have attained the memory and speed capable of modeling the intricate processes involved in holography and of controlling the mechanisms necessary to carry them out.
I've been incorporating computers into the holographic process, and everywhere I use them they seem to add a new ease and capability to the process. For example, our light-meter output is displayed in real time on a computer screen, which provides a profile scan of the intensity across the plate and makes the whole process of measuring uniformity and beam ratios easy and accurate and provides an automatically recorded picture. Another example is our method of measuring distances: we measure the coordinates of each optical element is space and put the information into the computer, which then calculates these distances automatically, thereby changing that whole procedure. Most importantly, it eliminates the need to stretch some measuring device from delicate mirror surface to delicate mirror surface. Finally, of course, in the work I have just completed, we've been programming the computer to predict the complete 3D light configuration, thereby precisely predicting the holographic result."
